Follower Enrollment (Track 2) 2020-2021

Upper division (junior/senior) and lower division (freshman/sophomore) undergraduate students who intend to take academic courses, learn core physics, and take part in outreach activities of Community of Physics (CP) in the forthcoming year, should get enrolled through the ongoing procedure of “Follower Enrollment (Track 1) 2020-2021”.

On the successful completion of the above-mentioned enrollment process, the followers will get the opportunity to take the course “Prelusive Natural Philosophy PNP01/2021”, where they (followers) will learn all the necessary mathematics and physics to build a solid background to study classical mechanics and classical electromagnetism. In the course, the followers will learn many advanced mathematics (e.g., Complex Calculus, Fourier analysis, differential equations, differential geometry) and their applications to physics along with some elementary but equally important mathematics (e.g., linear algebra, single and multivariable calculus, probability theory). Arguably, each of them is equivalent to one course, but the idea is not to explain everything, rather we emphasize on presenting an intuitive picture of each topic in a pedagogical way. The primary objective of this course is to teach the connection between physics and mathematics.

Upon completion of PNP01/2021 with satisfactory grades, the followers will get an opportunity to get enrolled in the course “Classical Electromagnetism EM01/2022”. This two-year-long course, split in four quartiles, is designed to teach one of the important core subjects of physics with exceptional details. The first quartile of the course will start from electrostatics explaining electric multipoles, conducting and dielectric matter along with the necessary mathematics. The second quartile continues electrostatics focusing on solving Laplace’s and Poisson’s Equations with significant mathematical content which includes theory of orthogonal functions, starts magnetostaics and gradually explicates magnetic force and energy, magnetic multipoles and magnetic matter. The third quartile introduces dynamic and quasistatic fields discussing slowly varying limits of sources and fields to ac circuit theory, explores general electromagnetic fields which embraces conservation of energy, linear momentum, angular momentum and conservation laws in matter. This quartile mostly shows an emphasis on application of electromagnetism and analyses the waves in vacuum, simple matter and dispersive medium. The fourth and the final quartile explores the most advanced topics of classical electromagnetism to date, which includes guided and confined waves, radiation and retardation, scattering and diffraction. This quartile exhibits the deep connection between special theory of relativity and electromagnetism and introduces the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods that lead to electromagnetic field theory. Overall, the classical electromagnetism course that we offer is a challenging but rewarding one.

Upper division (junior/senior)[1] and lower division (freshman/sophomore) undergraduate students from Physics, Theoretical Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering can apply for this (Track 1) enrollment process. Newly admitted undergraduate students, who expect to start their freshman year no later than April 2021, are also allowed to apply.

The prospective followers must complete their applications properly. On the successful submission of their applications, the applicants will be added to a Google Classroom, where they will be asked to upload their academic documents (e.g., academic transcripts). Then the prospective followers will sit for the “Track 1 Entrance Examination 2020-2021” (a take-home test of 100 marks) and upload their answer scripts on Google Classroom. After finishing the aforesaid sections, the followers will be invited to schedule and attend an interview over Skype. Upon successful completion of all the above-mentioned segments, the “Track 1 Follower Enrollment Committee” will make the decision regarding the application. Accepted followers will be provided with CP Moodle accounts to access the courses they intend to enroll (e.g., PNP01/2021).

Attending CP courses are (as always) free of costs, however, completing them require the display of passion for physics and outstanding patience on the followers’ part. The classes of PNP01/2021 begin on January 02, 2021. The course consists of 24 classes (4 hours each on Saturdays), 2 mid-term examinations, and 1 final examination. Classes of PNP01/2021 end on June 12, 2021. The classes of EM01/2022 starts on July 03, 2021. In the course of EM01/2022, there will be four quartiles, each of six months. Each quartile consists of 24 classes (4 hours each on Saturdays), 24 homework assignments, 2 mid-term examinations, and 1 final examination. The course ends on June 11, 2023. All the activities and classes will be conducted onsite. Both courses can be used to fulfil the membership requirements at CP.[2]
